Links Member beliefs Most Latter-day Saints are fully aware that black men were excluded from the priesthood from its inception till It was largely taught in the Church that up through the s blacks were denied the priesthood because they were from the lineage of Cain, who was cursed with a black skin after killing his brother Abel.
People were born black because they were less valiant in the pre-existence. The ban on blacks holding the priesthood was reversed due to revelation received by the prophet Spencer W. Kimball in and was not due to the civil rights movement. Prospective converts, even black ones, are not told about the prior priesthood ban on blacks.

Please help them to walk in paths of truth and righteousness and keep them from the evils of the world. Bless them that they shall be happy at times and serious at times, that they may enjoy life and drink of its fulness. Never has there been a greater need for righteous mothers—mothers who bless their children with a sense of safety, security and confidence about the future, mothers who teach their children where to find peace and truth and that the power of Jesus Christ is always stronger than the power of the adversary. Every time we build the faith or reinforce the nobility of a young woman or man, every time we love or lead anyone even one small step along the path, we are true to our endowment and calling as mothers and in the process we build the kingdom of God.

Faithful LDS that are aware of the undeniable similarities between the LDS Temple Ceremony and the Masonry Rituals usually reconcile that issue by echoing what the early prophets have said. Essentially the stance is that the Masons originally had the true temple ordinances from the original true church that existed in Old Testament times. These rituals are believed to have been practiced by the members of God’s true church in Solomon’s Temple. Some Latter-day Saints feel obliged to hold to the view that Masonry derived from King Solomon’s Temple, because it is theologically less complicated to do so than accept the historical roots of Masonry.
As one Masonic writer recently noted: With books such as McGavin’s Mormonism and Masonry still in circulation, and perpetuation of the tradition of antiquity in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, it is hard to overcome the Latter-day Saint belief that Masonry is derived from King Solomon’s Temple.

Comments It was a blistering hot day in NYC. I was 23 and had graduated from BYU two months earlier. Now I was nearing the end of my summer internship at a very fast-paced advertising agency. From my apartment window, I looked out over the Hudson River where a city that shimmered with opportunity lay before me. The whole world was looking bright, but inside, I felt…cloudy.
And when they did, it was mainly questions about Church history. I began doubting whether or not I believed in the Church anymore. In my mind, doubts were for those people who had serious struggles in life or who chose paths that took them away from the Church—not for an active returned missionary like me. It was at this time of great confusion that my friend called me from the airport, en route to his mission.
