Sorry, something has gone wrong. It depends on the manufacturer and type of unit you have. Some do require that you vent straight up through the heated portion of the building and out the roof. In this case you need double wall vent, a roofjack to put over the ventpipe to keep water from coming in around the pipe when it rains and a cap for the ventpipe for the same reason.
If it is a direct-vent type, you probably will only need to cut about a 7″ round hole through the wall for the vent assembly. It mounts directly to the back of the unit and provides fresh air for combustion and vents the products of combustion back outside.

Its a foreclosure and doesn’t have a water heater in it. What Id like to do is convert to propane and get an on demand water heater. Luckily the water heater could be mounted close to the outside wall. I would just like to have some question answered so I dont walk into the place and get weird looks. First question is, how deep would I need to bury the gas line? I’m thinking that if I surround the line in 1 inch PVC out of the ground it would be good just so the gas line isn’t exposed.

The theory is that cylinders should not be filled beyond 80 percent of their rated capacity. The extra 20 percent allows for safe expansion of LP that might occur, for example, if you filled your container in a cold climate and then immediately headed somewhere hot. The OPD valve would provide a safety margin for heat-caused expansion of the gas. Inside of a cylinder equipped with an OPD valve is a small float that is pushed up as the level of LP rises in the cylinder.
When the 80 percent level is reached, bingo! The float closes off the valve, stopping the inward flow of LP.
