George Edalji was enough in itself to convince me both of the extreme improbability of his being guilty of the crime for which he was condemned, and to suggest some at least of the reasons which had led to his being suspected. He had come to my hotel by appointment, but I had been delayed, and he was passing the time by reading the paper. I recognized my man by his dark face, so I stood and observed him.
He held the paper close to his eyes and rather sideways, proving not only a high degree of myopia, but marked astigmatism. The idea of such a man scouring fields at night and assaulting cattle while avoiding the police was ludicrous to any one who can imagine what the world looks like to eyes with myopia of eight dioptres—the exact value of Mr. Edalji’s myopia, according to Mr.

Metrics Book description Freud may never have set foot in Cambridge – that hub for the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers and scientists – but his intellectual impact there in the years between the two World Wars was immense. This is a story that has long languished untold, buried under different accounts of the dissemination of psychoanalysis. John Forrester and Laura Cameron present a fascinating and deeply textured history of the ways in which a set of Freudian ideas about the workings of the human mind, sexuality and the unconscious, affected Cambridge men and women – from A.
Rivers to Bertrand Russell, Bernal, Strachey and Wittgenstein – shaping their thinking across a range of disciplines, from biology to anthropology, and from philosophy to psychology, education and literature. Freud in Cambridge will be welcomed as a major intervention by literary scholars, historians and all readers interested in twentieth-century intellectual and scientific life.
Cambridge seems on its surface less rich than the London centre of psychoanalysis. Yet what Forrester and Cameron show is how extraordinarily rich this tale is … Without a doubt this is one of the most important books on twentieth-century British intellectual history I have read in a very long time. The Times Literary Supplement ‘Another of the strengths of this book is its considerable creativity and originality will reach a broader scholarly and even a general audience than competing books about Cantabragians not mentioned in standard histories of Freud’s influence.
Avello Publishing Journal ‘… Freud in Cambridge will appeal to novel-readers as much as to historians and psychoanalysts, providing a treasure trove of anecdotes and gossip, along with rich analysis of intellectual trends.

October 17th, Fernie’s place on this map has finally been given proper scrutiny by historian Wayne Norton. The internment camps at Fernie and nearby Morrissey were dress rehearsals for the removal of Japanese Canadians from the B. Patriotism and William Bowser by Wayne Norton In this Ormsby Review exclusive, Wayne Norton reveals that in his brief term in office , the Conservative Premier William Bowser fanned the flames of patriotism stoked by mounting Canadian war casualties and the German sinking of the passenger liner Lusitania off the Irish coast in May He and others saw these men — mostly recent immigrants — as a security threat and as a menace to the employment of British subjects in the coalmines around Fernie.
By September , most miners of military age had either enlisted or had been interned. By any measure, Fernie is a long way from Victoria.

It concludes by speculating on future directions for work on Wilde and sexuality. Download this page in PDF format Figure 1: Wilde was a rich, glamorous, aristocratic celebrity, famous for his wit and funny plays. Yet when his homosexuality came to light, Victorian society was shocked. Wilde was hunted down, prosecuted for his homosexuality, and thrown into prison; he died soon after his release. The scandal made his name unspeakable and works unsalable. Only after decades did it become possible to mention him.
His trials made homosexuality even more invisible than it had been before. This sketch has the seeds of a great story.

The Correct Drumstick Grip: When I was a kid I suspected that there had to be so much more to the grip and to striking a drum or cymbal. Yet the thumb-first finger fulcrum was gospel. Maybe I was missing something. The drummer should hold the stick between thumb and first finger. This is the fulcrum. End of story, except for the occasional nod to a hinge-like wrist motion and the rare allusion to a whipping motion of the arm. What bothered me was that aside from thumb and first finger, the other fingers were left to their own devices.
It sure left a lot to chance. At the same time, however, there was no disputing the notion that the thumb and first finger could very well constitute a fulcrum, which is a term often used interchangeably with pivot point. That made sense, alright. But it needled me that if the stick rested on a pivot, constructed by the thumb and first finger with benign second, third, and fourth fingers, how could there be leverage? Could leverage be obtained from that thumb and first finger?
How could they supply leverage or load?
The station began as the location for a beacon for the port of Maryborough in the s, to a pilot station in the late s and a light and signal station in the early s. For more than a century the light station and pilots at Inskip were responsible for the safety of ships at sea. It was a lonely way of life for a succession of men, often with families, as they responded to the call of people in need.

Etymology[ edit ] The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon Willesdune, meaning the Hill of the Spring, and a settlement bearing this name dates back to AD. The Domesday Book of records it as Wellesdone. One of these statues is thought to be a Black Madonna , which was insulted by the Lollards , taken to Thomas Cromwell’s house and burnt in on a large bonfire of “notable images” including those of Walsingham, Worcester and Ipswich. There was also a “holy well” which was thought to possess miraculous qualities, particularly for blindness and other eye disorders.
By the population had grown to , , a phenomenon of rapid growth that was to be repeated in the s in neighbouring areas such as Harrow. The Metropolitan line service was withdrawn in , when the station was served by the Bakerloo line, and later the Jubilee line. The First World War caused Willesden to change from a predominantly middle class suburb to a working class part of London. After the war, Willesden grew rapidly as many factories opened up with numerous flats and houses.
We amended our regular Sunday posting on Tuesday to ensure that our readers would know straight away the situation on the fire. The public officials in this matter used a lot of hyperbole. There was a lot of talk of a national catastrophe. The fire was an act of stupidity that became a serious commercial loss to the country because of the stupidity of the Government, the lack of effective leadership on the ground, and the ill preparedness in terms of equipment for the fire.
They did not even have fire extinguishers in the bloody straw market to stop a simple fire that was started by someone who splashed some flammable liquid and started the fire. Then there were reports that when the fire trucks arrived for 20, some say 40 minutes they could not find water to fight the fire.

Here’s testimony and background on the FAIL and the perspective of frustrated users: Eagle which are also McClatchy papers. None of the three websites are allowing readers to read or post comments online. We have all tried different browsers but to no avail.
Many of us are subscribers and have all tried signing out and signing back in and we all get the E-edition in our e- mail. However, two of my friends have the app on their smartphones and can do it. The general consensus is that all the Star wants to do is track our info. That’s fine but not all of us have smartphones or the app.

At the outbreak of war the Admiralty immediately instituted the convoy system as proven method of defeating U-Boats, but the convoy system was essentially defensive, which didn’t suit Churchill.
Therefore one of Churchill’s first moves was to promote an offensive strategy against U-Boats through the use of hunting groups based on an aircraft carrier. Whitsunday wanderings and my first manta ray encounter. We set off for no particular destination in the Whitsundays, my only timetable commitment being in five days time, for a haulout at Mackay. Although we were not on a river, these ghastly power cruisers slow down for no one, ignore the simple rules of the road, about who gives way to who and don’t give a damn about the wake they cause, as they for some reason known only to themselves must at all costs , including deviating from their course, cross ahead of a yacht under sail.

Dr Quimn, Mad Woman broadcast in There is a lesbian magazine titled Quim , and related to the term are the portmanteau words ‘queef’, ‘kweef’, ‘quiff’, and ‘queefage’, all meaning ‘vaginal fart’ and derived from ‘quim’ in combination with ‘whiff’. In addition to the clumsily Anglicised ‘quim’, ‘cwm’ was also adopted into English with the more accurate phonetic spelling ‘coombe’, from the Old English ‘cumb’. Indeed, so common is the word in English placenames that Morecambe Bay is often mis-spelt Morecombe: There is also a song titled Biddy Mulligan: In America, ‘combe’ appears in the name of Buncombe County, from which the slang term ‘bunkum’ is derived.
Congressional representative Felix Walker, ending a long-winded House of Representatives speech in , insisted that he was “bound to make a speech for Buncombe” Jonathon Green, Thus, ‘buncombe’ became synonymous with nonsensical speech, and was later simplified to ‘bunkum’. We have seen how ‘cu’ originated as an ancient feminine term. In the Romance languages, the ‘cu’ prefix became ‘co’, as in ‘coynte’, the Italian ‘conno’ and ‘cunno’, the Portugese ‘cona’, and the Catalan ‘cony’.
